Separate collection of plastic consumer packaging increases material recycling of plastics

Plastic is excellently suited for recycling. It can be recycled several times as a material, as long as it is collected and sorted appropriately. The draft of the EU Packaging Directive proposes that the recycling rate of plastic should be 55% by 2025.

The plastic industry uses recycled plastic to replace virgin raw materials that are manufactured from oil. Recycling waste as materials is of primary importance. Plastics that are unsuitable for recycling should be used to generate energy.

Empty and clean plastic packaging can be recycled. Plastic packaging containing residues of hazardous substances such as paint, chemicals, oil or pharmaceuticals must be recycled via different routes. They are sorted as energy wastes or mixed wastes.

In Finland, Fortum is responsible for the processing of separately collected plastic.
